Winter Travel Tips When Visiting Moose Jaw

When you’re driving in the Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, area in winter, you can encounter bad weather and hazardous road conditions. Here are some tips to stay safe.

Plan Your Journey

Before you set out, plan the route you are going to take and check the weather forecast and highway conditions on your route.  Allow more time for your journey than you would usually, so you don’t feel rushed. If you do find yourself running behind schedule, remember that it’s better to arrive late than not to arrive at all.

Watch Your Speed

The most important thing when driving in winter is to drive at an appropriate speed. You need to drive a lot slower than the posted speed limit in snow or ice. Don’t use cruise control on the highway. If the wheels spin on snow or ice, it can cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and, if the driver behind you is too close, make that distance even bigger to allow them enough room so they don’t rear end you if you have to stop quickly.

Stay Alert

You need to be more alert in poor visibility, so you shouldn’t drive when you’re tired. Approach intersections and highway on-ramps with more caution, it is best to assume that other drivers will do something unexpected. Be prepared for animals running out onto the road.
