All-Around-Great 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Comes to Canada

Car manufacturers across the globe have finally started to spend more resources on advancing hybrid and electric powertrain technology.

Many have succeeded, but none have introduced an all-electric pickup truck that can keep up with its gas-powered counterparts.

Ford has changed all that with the all-new, all-electric, all-great 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

Overview

With large, strong bodies, pickup trucks are some of the most fuel inefficient vehicles out there today. However, they are needed by many drivers for both work and pleasure. Ford created the 2022 F-150 Lightning with an eye toward keeping the power and performance while adding in fuel economy and environmental consciousness.

Design

Ford did not break the mold with the Lightning's design; on the contrary, its exterior look is almost exactly the same as the gas-powered F-150s. A large rectangular grille and face are surrounded by a solid band of headlights for a modern and arresting look.
Inside, there were some design changes to accommodate the electric motor and battery packs. To begin, Ford will only offer the F-150 Lightning in a crew cab model with a 5.5-foot bed. There is more storage space in this model thanks to the huge front-trunk cargo bay area. In addition, the dashboard sees the most drastic changes thanks to an extra-large, vertical infotainment touchscreen display.

Performance

Just because it went electric does not mean that the F-150 Lightning stopped offering power and performance. Instead, it offers even more than many of its gas-powered siblings, along with excellent driving ranges.

All-wheel drive (AWD), an astounding 775 lb-ft of torque, 0 to 97 km/h acceleration time of 4.4 seconds, two electric motors come standard on the Lightning, but drivers do have the choice between two battery pack options: Standard-Range and Extended-Range.

The Standard-Range battery pack provides drivers with 426 horsepower and 370km of driving range.

The Extended-Range battery pack version is where the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning really shines. This model delivers 563 horsepower and 482km of driving range. It also offers 4,535 litres of towing capability to ensure that drivers can haul equipment, campers, boats, and more with ease.

Technology

The most impressive all-electric pickup truck to ever hit the market is not lacking in technology. Ford packs the Lightning with many standard driver-assist technologies, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. BlueCruise hands-free driving is also available for drivers who like and want the semi-autonomous driving experience. In addition, Ford Intelligent backup power allows drivers to use the truck as a generator in case of a power outage.

Infotainment

The interior of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is dominated by a large, 12.0-inch, vertical touchscreen display that runs Ford's latest Sync 4 infotainment software. It offers additional capabilities with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, in-dash navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
