The Ford Explorer received some significant updates for the 2020 model year. The changes added to this already popular SUV make it even more versatile and rugged. Here are some features you can expect to see.
The New Platform
The 2020 Ford Explorer went back to its rear-wheel-drive roots, but kept is unibody construction for a smooth, on-road ride. This new Explorer offers better handling and performance with the new platform, and it has more towing power too. When fully equipped, this Ford can now tow up to 5,600 pounds.
The Engine Choices
Buyers can choose between three different engines for the new Explorer. The base is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower. For more power, the Explorer Hybrid has a 3.3-liter V-6 and an electric motor for a total of 318 horsepower. The Explorer ST is the most powerful model. Its twin-turbo V-6 generates 400 horsepower and gets 415 pound-feet of torque.
All models and engines have a new 10-speed automatic transmission, and every model, except the ST, comes standard with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive is an option for the XLT and the Limited, and it comes standard with the ST.
The Trim Levels
Ford offers the gas-powered Explorer in four trim levels. The XLT gets you roof rails and heated side mirrors, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels and a hands-free liftgate. The ST has LED lighting all around, and the Platinum comes with Powerfold mirrors.
